Umaid Bhawan Palace
Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the most remarkable and beautiful palaces in Rajasthan located in Jodhpur, the Blue City. It is one of the most visited and must visit attractions on Jodhpur. In fact, Jodhpur trip is incomplete without visiting this magnificent palace. It is a splendid example of Indo-colonial and art deco style of the 30s.
The Umaid Bhawan Palace is the only palace to be constructed in the 20th century. Construction of this building took 14 years. About three thousands artisans worked in construction of this 20th century palace – the Umaid Bhawan Palace. It was called Chittar Palace during its construction due to its location on Chittar Hill, the highest point in Jodhpur, the Blue City. A distinctive feature of this palatial palace is the fact that the hand-chiseled sandstone blocks have been put together in a special system of interlocking. There is no mortar binding. This is even more remarkable because the palace is very large - 195 meters long and 103 meters wide.
Garden of the Umaid Bhawan Palace is simply gorgeous. There is also a museum featuring and focusing on the 20th century history of royal family of Jodhpur. Museum remains open 9 am to 5 pm. The imposing entrance leads one to the lobby adorned with black Belgium marble flanked by two impressive banqueting-halls - the Rathore Durbar and the Marwar Hall. Crystal lamps mounted Shikar trophies in the Palm Court lead to the spectacular 56 meters high Center Dome Hall. A pair of polished marble stairs leads to the Maharaja's private apartments and the regal suites. With original furniture in all the rooms, each room seems more luxurious than the other.
A part of Umaid Bhawan has been converted into a luxury hotel and managed by Taj Group of Hotels. The hotel is one of the leading hotels of the world offering world-class accommodation facilities.
