Keoladeo Ghana National Park
Keoladeo Ghana National Park, formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is a UNESCO world heritage site near Bharatpur in Rajasthan. It is India’s most famous avifauna sanctuary featuring different species of resident and migratory birds. According to Sir Peter Scott Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary is the world’s best bird area. The park is home to about 366 different species of birds, 379 different floral species, 50 different species of fish, 13 different species of snakes, 5 different species of lizards, 7 species of turtles, and a variety of other invertebrates. The park is best known for migratory birds which come here mostly during the winter season. Thousands of rare and highly endangered birds such as the Siberian Crane come here during the winter season. The park has different species of waterfowls and landbirds.
Waterfowls at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary
Commonly seen waterfowls are common teal, cotton teal, little cormorant, great cormorant, painted stork, Asian open-billed stork, wood sandpiper, green sandpiper, common sandpiper, oriental ibis, darter, gadwall, shoveler, and Sarus cranes.
Landbirds at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary
Commonly seen landbirds are Grey hornbill, Marshall’s iora, partridges, quail, bulbuls, buntings, chats, warblers, babblers, bee-eaters, etc.
Prey Birds at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary
There are many birds of prey also found at this bird sanctuary. They are Pallas’ sea eagle, crested serpent eagle, tawny eagle, short-toed eagle, osprey, peregrine, spotted eagle, imperial eagle, greater spotted eagle, etc.
The most recommenced way to enjoy bird watching at this avifauna sanctuary is cycle rickshaw ride. The best time to visit this famous avifauna sanctuary is the period between August and February. Nearest airport is located at Agra, 50 km away. Bharatpur is well-connected by roads and rails.
